The greatest blessing, and curse, of the trombone is its volume. People can hear me from blocks away, I can cut through traffic and in a busk off, I can out-play almost anyone.
I had to get a permit to play in Quebec city. This was the real deal, I had to audition and everything. They told me to write down a list of 10 songs I could perform, then asked me to play 2 of them.
Afterwards, the guy audtioning me said "you're technique and everything is very good, but erm... well... we think... maybe.... ummm.... I'm sorry, you're just too loud"
My heart sank. It's like someone telling you that you're overqualified for a job. It's supposed to be a good thing, but the result is still the same. No job. No busking.
"Is there anyway you could play quieter?" he asked " a mute or something?"
MUTE MY TROMBONE? How dare he! I wanted to slap him or give him a lecture about discrimination against brass instruments. Instead, I sat down with him and looked at a map of all the busking spots in the city. There was a whole section of places that were 'no saxaphone' zones.
We finally found somewhere for me to play, but I still got noise complaints. Don't worry Quebec, I'm through with you now. You can go back to your precious guitars.
HAHA Maya! does that mean that some poor dude seriously has a job to sit through busking auditions!!!??
