This isn't them, but it's close enough
I stepped into the living room where there were knitted afghans everywhere, except the back wall. That had a deer head mounted on it. The room smelt of freshly baked maple pastries and cheap perfume. I sat down in an easy chair and tried to become invisible.
I'd missed the book discussion so the conversation had turned to how sexy Robert Duvall was and how saggy various body parts had become. The girls are Sue's friends; Betty, Muriel, Melin and Geraldine.
It came to discussing what book to pick for next month. No one wanted to choose one. Then someone said: "Maya what was the last book you read?"
I thought for a moment. I've been reading books set in the places I've been travelling. The last one I read was set in Nova Scotia.
"Fall On Your Knees" I finally announced.
"Was it good?" Geraldine asked
"Yeah, it was actually. Very well written"
"What's it about?"
It was hard to explain. It wasn't about anything in particular.
"Well it's set in Nova Scotia, and it follows a family across a few generations."
"Ooooh it sounds wonderful!" They exclaimed.
"It was pretty intense" I continued "I found it very emotionally draining".
"Oh it's not like 'The Shipping News' with all that incest is it?" asked Betty
Actually that was exactly what it was like, but with a lot more incest. Man, if they thought 'The Shipping News' was bad, this was 10 times worse and far more graphic.
Spoiler Alert: Fathers raping daughters who become pregnant and prostitutes, suicide, murder and lesbian sex scenes. I'm not sure these god-fearing women would like this book.
I tried to back track.
"That book Muriel mentioned sounded good" I said "I think I've heard of it. Great reviews. Maybe you should do that one?"
But it was too late. They were already making a bulk order off Amazon. I'm not going back there again. I think I'll stick to Oprah's book club.
